About Gin

There’s enormous diversity in how each gin tastes since each distiller uses a different recipe. Yes, gin must have a strong juniper flavour to it, but distillers are able to add any botanicals they like to achieve their unique taste. Popular flavours they add include citrus fruits, nuts, and spices.

What’s more, consumers are more interested than ever in a brand’s story, along with each gin making process, rather than just buying the cheapest gin available, as such, global sales of gin are up 4% year-on-year.

A Short History of Gin
It’s thought that even as far back as 1585 English soldiers were knocking back the juniper-based spirit to calm their nerves before they went in to battle.  In the Netherlands they had seen Dutch soldiers drinking before battle, hence the saying "Dutch courage"

In 1670 malt wine re-distilled with juniper was being sold in pharmacies. Unlicensed gin production then led to an influx of gin-shops springing up across the UK. It was during the 1800s that people took to a sweeter cordial gin, which has recently made a comeback!

The 1920s and 1930s are thought of as the golden age of gin. It became the drink of choice among Hollywood stars until vodka came and stole its thunder. However, gin underwent resurgence in the 1980s following the launch of Bombay Sapphire and now, craft gin is one of the most exciting trends to emerge in years!
